They have a nice selection of various items. Some more of than others. Anything they don't have can often be ordered in from their catalog. Just got to let them know what you need and they can help recommend things. Now they do have policies they follow and they let you know upfront about them. I have ordered a couple of items from them and gotten what I was looking for.
We bought our bikes at Performance Bike after looking at a number of local bike shops. We were very happy with our purchase and the service during our first bike buying experience but it was the maintenance service that has blown us away and secured us as a customer for as long as we own bikes. My husband got three flats in three rides and as one can imagine it was unbelievably frustrating for us. Performance came through every time and worked tirelessly (no pun intended) to make sure we were taken care to the best of their ability. Along the way we asked a number of questions to the staff all of which were met with educated and experienced answers and a great attitude. They were apologetic about the issues we were having despite it not being any fault of theirs and gave us great service each time we came in until the problem was resolved. With a fixed bike and more knowledge, we've been enjoying rides every weekend since. Performance has an excellent staff that I trust and respect and I wouldn't recommend anywhere else.
Now prices I think they are reasonable for this type of store. They aren't the cheapest on the market, or the most expensive. Biking goods do tend to be pricier due to design for outdoor and specialty use. I personally have had their products worked well and I'm quite mean to my bike stuff and gone thru a few accidents. Some things you can get cheaper elsewhere, but based upon my experience it's longevity is often less from other places, especially helmets.
If you are getting a new bike, I highly recommend a membership since the number of points or money value you get is great. For anyone who plans to regularly shop here, the membership pays off. I use the points all the time for surprise expenses. Some save them up for big items others use it with every purchase. Up to you but however you use them it saves you money. They do get some nice sales that last a nice amount of time for tire tubes, and bike glasses among other products.
I'm a commuter biker who got my bike from them 5 years ago. I've been a member ever since. The service is great, I love all the repair/technicians they are great, knowable and quite flexible in helping. They have some free classes and events that get held now and then. Most of them are bike enthusiasts themselves so they speak from firsthand experience. If you come here often you may find an employee whose opinion fits your needs best. Don't be afraid to ask them questions.
Brought in two older bikes for minor maintenance service. I appreciate their staff's sensitivity on how to address the issues in a cost sensitive manner. On one, they helped me find the parts I needed and I took everything home to fix myself. On the other, they did enough troubleshooting to address an issue I was having with lubrication (and sitting overnight) instead of trying to push replacing. I so appreciate honest help and will continue to give my business here.
Brought in an expensive bike for maintenance. They made an error that could potentially cause the part to wear out. They owned up to the error and replaced the part, free of charge. It is easy to find a tech, but hard to find a tech who truly stands behind their work. I feel very safe with Performance Bike and will continue to have all of my service done there. Thank you.
This bicycle shop is by far the best. I've been to several stores and the others weren't bad it's just that performance went ABOVE AND BEYOND to make sure I got the right bike, they've explained and answered any questions I had regarding bikes, repairs, gears, I mean everything. Jessica and Matt really took their time with me being that I am such a newbie at this cycling activity down to the payment part. I really appreciate the service. They really made me feel like family. Thank you so much performance bicycle in chapel Hill.
On the repair and tune up side. Often times, if they are not busy they will help on adjustments and minor repairs right away. If they are busy, then it may be a wait. Now their tune up and clean up service does need to be scheduled in advance. They cannot serve all bikes at once and it is time consuming. I often schedule ahead of time by a week or two during the popular season (it is also due to my commuting schedule). Winter times I can usually get in within the next 3 days or so. Also listen and read their policies they have you sign. It gives them permission to work on your bike and also state how to get your bike back from them (so some random person doesn't state it is their bike and walks off with it). I've had them call if they need to do something else and get permission for it.
